This Bioinformatics Engineer position plays a critical role in supporting Research and Early Development through the development and optimization of next-generation bioinformatics workflows. As part of the Bioinformatics Engineering team, you will focus on engineering excellence—optimizing workflows for performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency in cloud environments. This is a highly collaborative role that intersects with computational scientists, statisticians, and laboratory researchers to translate Moderna’s scientific ambitions into robust and scalable codebases.
You will be directly involved in refactoring Python-based pipelines, maintaining CI/CD practices, and ensuring proper version control and test coverage. Your contributions will directly influence how Moderna scales its computational research capabilities and delivers data insights critical to therapeutic development.

Here’s What You’ll Do:
Your key responsibilities will be:
- Develop and implement robust, efficient bioinformatics workflows and computational tools that serve Research and Early Development needs.
- Refactor and optimize existing Python-based pipelines for enhanced scalability and automation in cloud-based environments.
- Ensure code integrity through Git/GitFlow practices, unit testing frameworks, and continuous integration/deployment (CI/CD) standards.
Your responsibilities will also include:
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders—including computational scientists, statisticians, and bench researchers—to translate research needs into scalable bioinformatics solutions.
- Maintain high-quality documentation detailing architecture, design patterns, and usage guidelines for developed tools and pipelines.
- Prepare and deliver presentations and technical demonstrations to cross-functional teams and collaborators.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications) :
- A Masters degree in bioinformatics, computational biology or other related field
- Strong proficiency in Python (experience with R is a plus)
- Working knowledge of developing and running bioinformatics pipelines in cloud computing environments (AWS)
- Experience with Docker, NextFlow DSL2, and unit testing a plus
- Ability to write scalable, maintainable, and well-documented code
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team environment
