Tutoring students enrolled in Russian courses, especially lower division courses, by helping solve problems, offering support, and suggesting study tips and strategies
Assists students in the computer lab with programs and general computer assistance.
When not tutoring, tutors will be asked to assist in curriculum design for the language lab, and daily
language lab upkeep.
12-15 hours per week depending on current demand for tutors. Flexible schedule – around your classes but NEEDS TO BE AVAILABLE primarily from 8 AM – 4 PM. Some night and weekend hours are available.
Required Qualifications
MUST BE A CURRENT UVU STUDENT REGISTERED
Show engagement in the Russian community outside of classroom experiences.
Must have a knowledge of Russian grammar:
For students learning Russian as a second language: (1) Russian 3050 is required, and (2) L2 students are required to have earned a B or better grade in courses they will be tutoring. Students with native or near native proficiency must demonstrate knowledge of Russian grammar. (students who have grown up using the language, or have had extensive language experiences, will need to show they can talk with students about Russian grammar. They will need to show they have taken Russian grammar courses, such as RUS 3050, or had some mentoring, teaching, or tutoring experience).
Must be ethical, responsible, and enjoy helping others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Proficient knowledge required in Russian. Must be able to use computers well. No special program knowledge is required, just a willingness to learn programs needed in the lab and tutor students in the same skills. Must list Russian language experience including experience learning or teaching Russian grammar.
Must have at least advanced level skills in Russian. Must be able to set a schedule and keep scheduled hours. Must be able to communicate in written English.
Advanced level skills in Russian. Able to explain and demonstrate Russian cultural norms for Russian students. Metalinguistic ability, the ability to explain how why things are written or said the way they are in Russian. Good interpersonal skills. In particular we are looking for someone to help students express themselves in their second language, Russian.
Preferred Qualifications
Some experience teaching or tutoring is preferred.
Physical Requirements
No or very limited physical effort required.
No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
