We are looking for a Registered Practical Nurse in our Gender Affirming Health Clinic!
Closing Date: May 31, 2021
Contract: 21 hours per week until March 31, 2022. Some evening and weekends hours may be required

Location: In accordance with current public health directives, training will be available both remotely (i.e., via teleconference and videoconferencing technologies) as well as onsite while respecting physical distancing.
During the current COVID-19 outbreak, work can be completed primarily from home with equipment provided by CMHA, with the exception of client injections that occur at our Aurora and Vaughan offices regularly. Once public health directives are lifted, the Registered Practical Nurse will be working from any of our office locations and will be required to travel within York Region & South Simcoe.
Job Profile:
The Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) builds relationships with and conducts outreach to Family Health Teams, community health centers, primary health care providers and trans and gender diverse-serving organizations to build program capacity and encourage others to provide gender affirming care.
The RPN explores and develops training curriculum; and facilitates and delivers training to external agency contacts.
The RPN also works in the Gender Affirming Health Clinic with clients ages 16 years of age and older who identify as trans, gender diverse, non-binary and/or questioning.
In collaboration with the GAHC team, the RPN supports clinic operations through the administration of client injections, waitlist management, attending team meetings, educating clients and family members about hormones, completing brief physical assessments and monitoring, and providing referrals to community resources.
In addition to compliance with all organizational policies and procedures, the incumbent is also expected to behave ethically, demonstrate competence in effective communication and team building in a collaborative environment and demonstrate confidence in decision-making and in building relationships.
Requirements:
- Licensed Registered Practical Nurse (Dipl. N.)
- Member in good standing with the Ontario College of Nurses; cannot be in the qualifying stages
- Four or more years of experience as an RPN, preferably in a mental health setting
- Excellent health assessment skills, sound clinical judgment and diagnostic skills
- Experience providing culturally competent and gender affirming care to trans and gender diverse populations with complex health needs.
- Experience doing outreach and building strong partnerships with community health centers and family health teams and other community resources
- Experience with public speaking, developing training curriculum and facilitation
- Knowledge of and experience with provision of injections and hormone replacement therapy
- A second language (French, Cantonese, Mandarin, Farsi, Italian, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Tamil, Urdu, French) is preferred
- Lived experience as member of or strong ally of the 2SLGBTQ community is an asset
- Knowledge of the Ontario Mental Health Act, mental health reform principles, the Substitute Decisions Act, the Health Care Consent Act and PHIPA requirements
- Ability to apply Recovery principles and empowerment oriented philosophies and practices in work with clients
- A valid Canadian driver’s license, a minimum $1,000,000 third party liability insurance and proof that insurance covers use of personal vehicle to transport clients
- A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check)
