The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Advancing Nutrition project is the Agency’s flagship nutrition project, led by JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), and a diverse group of experienced partners. Launched in September 2018, USAID Advancing Nutrition implements and provides technical support to nutrition interventions across sectors and disciplines for USAID and its partners. The project’s multi-sectoral approach draws together global nutrition experience to design, implement and evaluate programs that address the root causes of malnutrition. Committed to using a systems approach, USAID Advancing Nutrition strives to sustain positive outcomes by building local capacity, supporting behavior change and strengthening the enabling environment to save lives, improve health, build resilience, increase economic productivity, and advance development.
SUMMARY
The Country Programs Communication Officer sits on the Knowledge Management team and will be responsible for working with the country office staff to develop and implement communication plans for the project’s 10 country programs. They will work closely with the Country Programs team to identify story ideas that highlight project successes, help country teams develop stories, and guide communication initiatives to share project results and impact. The position is based in Arlington, VA and will be supervised by the Knowledge Management director. The salary range is $47,500–$64,865. Please note the JSI are telecommuting due to the pandemic and will be transitioning back to the office in September, 2021.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Country Programs Communications Officer will:
Develop plans with country teams to increase the visibility of the project’s country work with country-based and global audiences.
Identify story ideas from existing content and interviews with country colleagues and help write or review content for multiple channels, including the project website, newsletters, case studies and success stories.
Ensure consistency of communications products and publications and brand application across country programs.
Contribute to USAID Advancing Nutrition’s social media accounts, working closely with the core KM Team to ensure timely and consistent messaging.
Support country teams to elevate visual communication, including through photography, design and multimedia.
Identify opportunities to improve internal communication across country offices and work with the core KM Team to develop efficient processes to facilitate communication.
Liaise with the KM Team to manage publication production and Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC) processes, communicating progress and/or delays to the USAID Advancing Nutrition KM team with efficiency and accuracy.
Strengthen capacity of USAID Advancing Nutrition country staff to share project achievements both internally and externally.
Manage the preparations for special events such as conferences and workshops, and support administrative and management activities such as staff retreats and meetings.
Advise and support country teams in liaising with the USAID Missions’ communications staff.
Orient country teams to the project Intranet and help country staff contribute to making it useful for global and country staff.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Master’s degree or relevant experience in the field of journalism, communication, nutrition, health, international development, or a related field.
Experience: Minimum 2 years of communication experience or 4 years of experience with no master’s degree. Experience with USAID contracts a plus.
Required Skills:
Demonstrated experience developing and executing strategic communication initiatives, preferably for global health programming.
Excellent written and verbal English skills. Must be able to synthesize technical material into short and concise communication pieces across different platforms.
Intermediate desktop layout and design skills in Microsoft Word, proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with Google Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud.
Experience in creating, marketing, and disseminating publications and other communications products.
Preferred Skills:
Knowledge of 508 compliance and accessibility requirements is highly desirable.
Experience with USAID or other donor agencies and demonstrated commitment to health or international development highly desirable.
Ability to think strategically to more effectively share USAID Advancing Nutrition resources.
Understanding of metrics for communication and experience in presenting data to demonstrate return on investment.
Ability and desire to work independently and manage various projects in a team setting.
Experience living or working in countries or regions where USAID Advancing Nutrition operates.
Ability to travel internationally.
Excellent time management and personal organization skills.
Sense of humor!
Languages: Professional proficiency in French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Russian highly desirable.
Salary commensurate with experience.
