Reference Librarian I Job Description
Position Purpose:
The purpose of this position is to perform responsible professional and direct service work advising and assisting patrons in identifying, accessing, navigating, and retrieving information at the Brookline Public Library. Handles all reference and reader’s advisory related library services, print and electronic; performs all other related work as required.
Supervision:
Supervision Scope: Performs professional library work of a diverse nature, following established policies and procedures; requires the exercise of some independent judgment and initiative.
Supervision Received: Work is performed under the administrative directions of the Supervisor of Reference, referring only unusual questions and problems to supervisor.
Supervision Given: May occasionally oversee the work of one or more volunteers, interns, or part time employees.
Job Environment:
Work is generally performed under typical library conditions; regularly required to work weekends and evenings. Operates a variety of basic and advanced computer system applications and automated library equipment as well as standard office equipment. Work requires contact with the general public, schools, students, and occasional contact with other libraries in provision of reference services. The employee has access to confidential library patron records. Errors could result in delay or loss of service and cause adverse public relations, as well as damage to buildings and equipment.
Essential Functions:

Staff the Reference and Information desks. Responds to reference questions and provides Reader’s Advisory service. Assists patrons to find resources to fulfill their information needs using the online catalog, electronic databases, the Internet, and other resources.
Provides information to patrons on library policies, services, activities, facilities, and regulations.
Troubleshoots computer problems for staff and patrons, in person, by phone or electronically. Assists with the set-up and use of audio-visual equipment.
Manages one or more collections; evaluates patron recommendations, selects new materials and shares this information electronically with other staff; replaces older or damaged materials; determines which materials are no longer needed based on professional criteria. Maintains budget for collection. Reads professional reviews from various sources.
Informs and instructs library users in the use of assistive technology materials and equipment. Learns the use of such equipment being developed to help the disabled.
Serves on library committees such as, display, policy, programs, or other.
Participates in professional development by attending library services related classes, workshops and conferences.
Leads book discussion groups and other forms of library programming for Adults. Communicates with other staff about potential program and outreach opportunities.
Serves as Officer of the Day as assigned. Has sole charge of the building and all staff working at that particular time/day. Handles any problems and signs time cards for part time employees.
Assists patrons with requests and performs circulation desk functions, and other tasks as needed.
Performs similar or related work as required.
As Reference/Information Librarian may perform specialized library duties in all or some of the following areas listed below as assigned.
Assists the Assistant Director for Technology in the design, support and maintenance of the library’s technological network infrastructure.
Serves as staff liaison to Friends of the Library; attends monthly meetings, communicates information between library staff and Friends group; assists Friends as needed.
Assists in coordinating the library’s social media presence; communicating with staff and followers about library programs, services and news.
Responds to followers’ questions and comments. Maintains professional tone and coordinates postings with other social media contributors. Shares in the development and implementation of the library’s social media strategy.
Assists with organization of tax forms on display; organization, set-up and distribution of state and federal forms.
Manages periodicals collection (magazines, newspapers, other serial publications), including processing of new arrivals’ repairs magazines; counts/shelves magazines; organizes periodical shelves. Orders/renews periodicals subscriptions; reports missed issues; handles subscription problems. Updates lists of periodicals holdings, tracks expenditures for periodicals.
Teaches a variety of technical skills to patrons on a one-on-one basis.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:Education, Training and Experience:
Master’s of Library and Information Science degree, supplemented by additional training in library technology is required, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job. Knowledge of foreign language in Spanish, Chinese, or Russian is desirable.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
Knowledge: Thorough working knowledge of library principles and procedures. Complete familiarity with automated library systems and related applications. Knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, forms, and equipment. Knowledge of e-readers, e-books, and ability to troubleshoot various technologies. Working knowledge of internet, social media trends and strategies.
Ability: Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other libraries. Interest in reading and literature. Ability to work with a high level of detail. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and deal effectively with interruptions. Ability to identify and to analyze complex issues and to develop appropriate recommendations. Ability to fairly and tactfully enforce library policies. Ability to express him/herself orally and in writing.
Skill: Excellent customer service and problem solving skills. Flexibility to adapt to constantly changing technology. Excellent reference skills. Skill in administrative and technical work related to information systems, office automation, and other technologies. Skill in word-processing, database, spreadsheet, presentation, library applications, library equipment and ability to troubleshoot software problems.
