This position is for a research associate to work on continuing research related to processes for the extraction of rubber, inulin and other products from the roots of Taraxacum kok saghyz also known as the Russian dandelion (TK) at high yield and purity. The position prefers a person with a PhD in Biological Engineering or a related discipline and experience in the extraction and bioprocessing of biomass for the recovery of high value products at high yield and purity. It also requires the ability to author peer reviewed publications synthesizing research conducted as part of the project. The responsibilities of the position will be to train lab members in processes used to extract rubber and inulin from TK roots and to characterize them. The training will include the use of analytical methods and equipment such as high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), advanced solvent extraction (ASE), gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and other analytical methods used to precisely quantify rubber and inulin in roots, root extracts and products. Another responsibility will be to advise current lab members on protocols for laboratory and chemical safety in the lab and to author peer reviewed publications synthesizing research conducted as part of the project. Support for the position will be 12 months at 5% time at $25/hour. The position will be located at OSU-Wooster in the FABE Department. Start date will be August 2021. Support will be provided by a USDA NIFA grant (BARRAL).
