Responsibilities
Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:
- Ensures implementation of information programs to publicize priority issues and/or major events, to include scheduling, production and distribution (through the UN Web TV platform and occasionally on other streaming platforms, as required) of multilingual (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian) live and on-demand streaming coverage of United nations meetings and events.
- Monitors and oversees the creation and maintenance of multilingual (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian) content on the UN Web TV websites and advises management on appropriate action as needed.
- Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of a media strategy and action plan, initiating pro-active media outreach efforts, proposing and arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
- Produces or oversees post-production and editing of video products through the video cloud platform.
- Prepares, on the basis of official UN documentation and other sources, initial drafts of articles or chapters for inclusion in UN newsletters, periodicals, reports and books.
- Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies. Monitors and analyzes special events, coordinates with diverse partners and the media to highlight and publicize key events.
- Oversees the publishing/uploading of multilingual (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish and Russian) videos and relevant metadata to the UN web TV website, and to relevant social media accounts.
- Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
- Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
- Provides guidance to multilingual webcast staff in the editorial and technical aspects of their daily work with the aim of ensuring live and on-demand multilingual coverage of United Nations meetings and events and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree, or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration is required.
Experience with multilingual content management is required.
Experience with streaming video technology is required.
Experience with streaming video editing and publishing is required.
Experience with managing video content on Social Media, including for YouTube, Facebook and/or Twitter is desirable.
Experience with media asset management systems is desirable.
Experience with supervising a multilingual team is desirable
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is also required.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
