Legal Assistance for Seniors (LAS) is a non-profit agency serving Alameda County residents who are
60 years of age and older. We provide legal advice and information, representation in court and
administrative hearings, and community education and training in the following areas: prevention of
elder abuse, public benefits, housing, guardianships, naturalization, and health law.
Through our Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP), LAS provides individual
counseling and community education to Medicare beneficiaries in the areas of Medicare, supplemental
coverage including Medicare Advantage and prescription drug plans, low income assistance programs,
and long-term care insurance.
This position
The Community Education (CE) Advocate delivers community education presentations, attends
outreach events, and assists the CE Coordinator at LAS. They are active in maintaining and growing our
CE program by building and extending community relationships, assisting with development of
presentation materials, and coordinating presentation and outreach event details. This position also
supports the HICAP and Legal programs. They attend CE Committee meetings and bi-monthly HICAP
Counselor meetings. This position reports to the Community Education Coordinator.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Promote Legal Assistance for Seniors
a. Coordinate and attend community outreach events
b. Publicize LAS/HICAP through traditional and social media
c. Publicize services to targeted communities throughout Alameda County
d. Provide support for the agency’s annual Elder Abuse Prevention Conference
2. Provide Community Education Outreach
a. Schedule, coordinate, and deliver CE presentations throughout Alameda County
b. Maintain relationships with current CE sites, provide outreach to new locations and groups
c. Schedule presentations in compliance with both community needs and agency contractual
requirements
d. Keep the CE databases and accurate and up to date
e. Assist with the development and maintenance of presentation outlines and supporting fact sheets
and publications
3. Support the HICAP and Legal departments
a. Maintain proficiency with all community education subject areas
b. Assist in the preparation, execution, and follow up for the Annual Conference on Elder Abuse
c. Attend legal case review and other trainings as appropriate
d. Train for and maintain registration as a HICAP Counselor
Provide HICAP telephone or in-person counseling as needed
f. Provide HICAP Counselors with technical support as needed
Qualifications
- Bilingual in Mandarin or Cantonese highly preferred; bilingual in Spanish, Tagalog, Hindi,
Vietnamese, Korean, Farsi, Arabic, or Russian desired
- Valid CA driver’s license, a vehicle, and appropriate insurance
- Experience with public speaking, teaching, or public relations
- Experience with scheduling or coordination of public activities
- Ability to work under fast-paced, occasionally stressful conditions with grace and humor
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Must demonstrate a commitment to serving the historically disenfranchised, interest in senior and
health care issues, and sensitivity towards seniors and people with disabilities
- Resourceful in networking, developing and cultivating community contacts
- Computer proficient, including Power Point, Word, Excel and database knowledge
- Self-motivated and able to work independently; detail oriented and organized
- Ability to work as part of a team to support organizational goals
- Thrives in a busy and diverse work environment
Working conditions & physical requirements
- Ability to regularly drive 30 miles a day and occasionally up to 70 miles a day to offsite
presentation locations
- Ability to lift 25 lbs
- Occasional work on evenings and weekends
- Ability to sit, use phone and computer systems for long periods of time
- Alternate between sitting and motion tasks frequently
Compensation:
Full time, non-exempt wage of $21.98/hour, 35 hours per week. Generous benefits package including
medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage; accrue up to 10 days vacation and 2 weeks sick
time; enrollment in and employer contributions toward 401k plan after 6 months; pre-tax cafeteria plan
(medical, transportation, childcare) after 6 months.
