The University of Delaware seeks applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures. We seek a visionary leader to guide us in the continued transformation of our course offerings and degree programs to meet the evolving needs of today’s students. Recent initiatives to meet the changing face of the field include new programs in Language for Specific Purposes (in Healthcare, Business, and Engineering) as well as collaborations with Game Studies, Global Studies, Fashion, Art History, and Linguistics. The Chair will lead the department to further ties across the University and to advance its reputation and visibility. The Chair will provide academic and administrative leadership, manage and secure resources for the Department, promote excellence in research and teaching, and foster a collegial atmosphere that supports the Department’s mission and vision. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in an area appropriate to Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and will have a distinguished record of scholarship, a commitment to teaching excellence, and leadership experience working with faculty, staff, and administration.

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Delaware is within the College of Arts and Sciences. The Department has a renowned history in scholarship and teaching and is committed to preparing students for a range of careers and helping them become global citizens – whether here on campus or in one of its numerous study abroad programs. The Department offers a B.A. in Languages, Literatures, and Cultures with concentrations in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies, Chinese Studies, French Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, Japanese Studies, Russian Studies, Spanish Studies, Three Languages, and World Language Education. Students can also study Arabic, Hebrew, Korean, and Portuguese. The Department also offers M.A. programs in Spanish, French, Italian Studies, Language Pedagogy, and Childhood/Elementary Education and sponsors numerous study-abroad programs.

The incoming Chair will lead a team of fifty full-time, eight part-time, and fourteen supplemental faculty, who teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and who conduct interdisciplinary research on a wide array of topics including literature, history, cultural studies, women’s and gender studies, cinema, games studies, and more, as well as in the areas of applied linguistics and second language acquisition. The Department has a strong interdisciplinary profile and promotes active engagement with other departments and programs across campus. The Department has a commitment to learning, scholarship, and engagement that enhance the University’s efforts to promote and support diversity, and that connect with and support the surrounding community. The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware offers exceptional educational experiences including integrated instruction, research and public engagement.
