CommuniCares Food Programs remove barriers to healthy eating so that everyone can access good food to prevent and/or manage chronic disease. We connect patients and staff to each other and to their local food system to build community and restore the natural environment.
Culinary education activities include virtual cooking classes, and in-person cooking classes and food demonstrations (pending public health guidance) that highlight garden-grown vegetables. CommuniCare implements Cooking Matters (http://cookingmatters.org/), curricula that equip families with the skills to select and cook healthy, affordable and delicious meals. Culinary education is integrated with clinical care and with the CommuniCare Garden & Outdoor Classroom, which distributed 2,000 lbs of produce to patients in its first year of production.

Supervision: Oversees volunteers including patients, community members and students interested in culinary education and community nutrition.
The Food Education Coordinator works under the supervision of the Food Programs Manager as part of the Food Programs team, comprised of a Garden Coordinator, paid and unpaid student interns and volunteers.
HOURS/SITE: Part-time: 20 hours per week across CommuniCare sites (Salud Clinic/West Sacramento; Davis Community Clinic and Hansen Family Health Center/Woodland). Most work to be performed on weekdays during normal business hours with occasional weekend and evening hours required.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct approximately two culinary education activities weekly, including planning, shopping for required supplies, executing and reporting on activities.
Develop and maintain relationships with clinical staff to promote culinary education and encourage patient referrals.
Communicate essential class information to patient participants in a timely manner, reminding them of upcoming classes and connecting them with relevant incentives.
Use the Electronic Health Record to schedule patient participants and monitor class participation.
Set-up and clean-up classroom kitchens before and after classes.
Train, coordinate, and evaluate volunteer and guest instructors.
Work with Food Programs Manager to evaluate culinary education activities and report outcomes to funders and other stakeholders.
Participate in training and networking opportunities with other food educators as applicable.
Support and/or lead proposal development to ensure program sustainability and growth.
MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience: Health education experience required, including training gained from extensive practical experience, academic courses, and/or vocational training. Experience working with persons living with or at risk for diet-related chronic diseases preferred. Commitment to working with low-income, under/uninsured communities is essential, and experience working within community service organizations is preferred.
Special Skills/Equipment:Â
Fluent Spanish and English skills are required; other desirable language skills include Russian and Punjabi Â

Work is performed in both an outdoor urban garden and in a typical office environment with moderate equipment noise. Travel to other agency sites required.
