As our new Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) Health Equity Coordinator, you will be responsible for collaborating with leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate Public Health’s equity initiatives such as tackling systemic racism as a public health issue. Moreover, your role will take a birds eye view of the social, economic, and systemic factors and root causes that impact the health and well-being of Jefferson County residents. We are looking for someone who can keep things in perspective, and at the same time is not afraid to get into the nitty gritty. By developing policy, you will communicate the strategic vision, and by working with community partners you will tackle systemic inequities in gender, race, economic opportunities, food and housing, and more that impacts the health of our residents. You will coordinate your efforts with the executive team, leadership, Equity Action Team, and other subject matter experts to strengthen and advance shared departmental goals and alignment with Board of Health goals and directives.
COVID related grant funding requires public health to address health equity issues. We are hiring this position to meet these grant deliverables as well as the evolving work we as an organization are doing around health equity.
Please note this position’s work schedule is flexible with the option of in-the-office and remote work. This position works the occasional evenings and weekends.
This position’s hiring range is $68,000 to $75,000 annually.
As of 4/9/21 position is limited to Covid-19 grant money and is currently a term limited position until July 2023. Intent is to develop sustainable funding to support organization wide health equity work.

As the Health Equity Coordinator for Public Health, you will: Serve as the primary subject matter expert for the department on all issues related to health equity and facilitate all health equity work.
Facilitation:
- Assesses trainings and coaching needs of the department.
- Recommends training, educational opportunities, and strategies to increase the capability of staff to identify and address health, racial, and social inequities.
- Coordinates and facilitates Public Health’s health equity work group.
- Works with community engagement group to conduct assessments, develop and deliver training, review related materials.
Collaboration:
- Facilitates conversations for shared understanding with internal and external groups to determine root causes and create innovative solutions to improve health, racial, and social inequities, and structural and systemic racism.
- Collaborates, plans, coordinates, and develops initiatives with external groups on health equity programs and solutions to address systemic determinates of health.
- Represents JCPH and assists staff in building and maintaining relationships with community partners, coalitions, and with other racial equity and justice groups in the County.
- Partners with other governmental, non-profits, and community-based organizations to develop solutions for populations experiencing inequities with access to health, social, and economic resources.
- Collaborates with intra-departmental units to ensure health equity principles and practices are integrated into programs and work products.
- Actively engages people and communities of color affected by disadvantage and poverty to alleviate harmful conditions in which people live, work, age, and play.
Policy & Procedures:
- Examines, assesses, and ensures policies (recruitment and retention, programs, practices, services, strategies, and tactics delivered by the department are unbiased, inclusive, evidence-based, best practice, and promising practices to increase health equity outcomes and eliminate embedded structural racism.)
- Provides technical assistance to staff who are developing policy platforms to address systemic racism and injustices.
- Collaborates with the Health Communications Office to assure that all communication is consistent with inclusive language.
- Reviews communication materials to ensure they meet health equity guidelines, standards, and policies.
- Ensures that models of community engagement are inclusive and eliminate embedded structural systemic racism.
Administration:
- Conducts surveys, reviews survey outcomes and indicators to ensure inclusive data. Provides input to enhance data collection and analysis. May prepare final reports and presentations.
- Please note, this position may supervise staff as role evolves.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, sociology, gender race equity, or similar
- Three or more years of experience in any combination of the following:
- Health equity initiatives supporting community engagement,
- Working with underserved communities and develop relationships,
- Program development, implementation, design, management, and evaluation,
- Subject matter expert lived/professional related race equity, gender equity, health equity, community engagement, organizational systems.
Or:
- Any combination of education and experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bilingual in Russian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, and/or Spanish
- Five or more years of experience in any of the following:
- Health equity initiatives supporting community engagement,
- Working with underserved communities and develop relationships.
- Program development, implementation, design, management, and evaluation.
- Subject matter expert lived/professional related race equity, gender equity, health equity, community engagement, organizational systems.
- Experience in policy development
- Previous experience with supervising staff
- Exceptional stress management ability
