Organizational Setting
In the Republic of Moldova livestock production is an essential part of subsistence farming, providing livelihoods for small farmers’ households. Smallholders and family farms can achieve higher levels of income, production and productivity through sustainable use of resources, increased production, better farm management, increased access to adequate public services and better integration into agri-food value chains. FAO mandate in Moldova is to support smallholders and family farmers to gain access to markets and trainings, enabling them to apply sustainable agricultural practices. The project intends to implement activities for addressing the issues of the smallholder farms, in particular of those dealing with livestock.
Reporting Lines
The consultant shall operate under the overall guidance and responsibility of the FAO Representative in Moldova; and under the direct supervision of the Lead Technical Officer.
Technical Focus
The International Consultant on Small Ruminant Value Chain should guide the value chain analysis, which will help to develop recommendations to address the gaps and bottlenecks available in the small ruminant sector, while addressing the effects of COVID-19 and negative climatic factors.
Tasks and responsibilities
- With the help of the team members and relevant stakeholders, collect and analyse all available data relevant to the small ruminant value chain in the Republic of Moldova
- Develop a data collection strategy on small ruminant value chain, with particular focus on the number of value chain actors and requirements on who need to be interviewed
- Draft survey programme, survey questionnaire and data collection protocol on the assessment of small ruminant value chain
- Perform the small ruminant value chain analysis based on the survey results.
- Develop recommendations on how to improve small ruminant value chain Moldova addressing the effects of COVID-19 and negative climatic factors.
- Include support measures in the recommendations on small ruminant value chain to help smallholders in the sustainable production of small ruminant products
- Perform any other duties required
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
University degree in Agricultural Economics relevant studies
At least 10 years of relevant experience in Agricultural Economics, with particular focus on value-chain analysis.
Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of another FAO languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian) for COF.REG. Russian knowledge is considered as an asset.
For PSA working knowledge of English.
