International Student Advisor

Position Summary

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:
Green River College has four locations, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite

learning centers in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve

high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the

college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning

English as a second language, and Continuing Education students. Green River’s service areas

are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian

Americans, Asians, Latinos/as, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern

Americans, among other communities.

The International Student Advisor is responsible for providing all aspects of advising to international students to support recruitment and retention in order to meet the enrollment goals of the College. This position reports to the Director of International Advising.

Position Responsibilities

Provide personal, relationship-based advising that is responsive to the diverse needs of our international students in areas including: academic, university transfer, immigration, personal, employment, cultural, and health

Serve as lead advisor for designated areas of study

Interpret academic degree requirements, academic policies and procedures to facilitate students’ academic progress

Assist students in creating customized degree plans in order to help them achieve their educational goals

Provide orientation sessions for international students

Work collaboratively with IP marketing team and other areas of International Programs and Extended Learning (IPEL) to continuously improve Green River College’s outstanding and competitive international advising program with a focus on nationwide university transfer

Market and promote Green River College’s educational programs and services to students, international agents and organizations

Develop and implement recruitment and retention strategies in collaboration with the advising team, marketing team, and other areas of IPEL

Demonstrate intercultural competence and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Regularly participate in trainings and professional development opportunities to further knowledge and self-awareness of diversity, equity and bias

Work within legal and ethical guidelines for WA state higher education institutions

Some evening and weekend work required

Occasional domestic and international travel required

Execute other related responsibilities as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree

Experience living abroad or equivalent experience adapting to a new culture and language

Demonstrated intercultural competency

Experience supporting students’ academic success through teaching, coaching, advising or mentoring

Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with clients and co-workers

Strong knowledge of MS Office

Attention to detail and good follow through

Experience working in a fast-paced environment with little downtime

Proficiency in a language other than English (preferably in one of the top languages spoken by our international students: Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Indonesian, Burmese, Malay, or Russian)

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching, coaching, advising or mentoring English Language Learners
