The Opportunity:
We are your neighbors.
You’ll find our libraries in neighborhoods all throughout Multnomah County. They are neighborhood libraries after all. Each location reflects the unique community it serves, but all locations serve as centers of community life, providing books, internet access, music, programs and meeting spaces for community members.
We are currently recruiting experienced library leaders for multiple Library Administrator opportunities. These positions are located in some of the most diverse neighborhoods in Multnomah County. Our patrons are African Americans, Native Americans, Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese and Latinos. In addition, we see a wide variety of patrons from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
As a Library Administrator, you will be responsible for ensuring your branch meets the needs of these diverse patrons. You will oversee all operations of the branch ensuring ensuring excellent service to the community. You will provide direct customer service such as reference assistance and circulation help. We are a dynamic and innovative library system, so you must be ready to embrace changes to serve our community in new ways.
You will use your demonstrated leadership skills to lead a diverse staff by modeling excellent coaching and communication skills while encouraging those skills in others. You will not shy away from the hard conversations and will engage your employees when managing their performance. You will promote collaborative decision making and negotiation as you work with your staff on change management. You will mentor and encourage the professional development of your staff through daily huddles, monthly staff meetings, and regular one-on-one meetings with your direct reports.
You will use your collaboration skills to partner with the branches in your region, the regional librarian, Neighborhood Libraries administration staff and other library managers to develop library goals and objectives. You will contribute to strategic planning for branch operations; work with senior library management to conduct neighborhood analysis and needs assessment and develop/change services to meet community needs. You will manage projects and serve on system-wide committees and teams encouraging participation by staff as appropriate.
You will investigate and respond to disturbances and concerns that may be a violation of the law or library rules and policies, including potential safety hazards and inappropriate patron behaviors. You will explain rules and policies to patrons and solicit patron cooperation and compliance. There may be times when you will need to take appropriate preventative and protective actions which may include excluding patrons and contacting local law enforcement or emergency medical services. You must demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor while working with customers, co-workers and community in such situations. Your ability to exercise quick and mature judgement in dealing with potentially disruptive, physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial in this role.
Of course, there will be other duties as assigned, but nothing you can’t handle.
