About the Position
Pretrial Associates (PTAs) are integral to the work we do in the courts and Central Booking. This opportunity is ideal as an entry-level position for an individual who has recently graduated from college or has commensurate experience.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
Client/Customer Service & Communications
Thoroughly and compassionately interviews recently arrested individuals in Central Booking locations in all boroughs to determine community ties; the information gathered plays a major role in the CJA’s recommendation to release them without bail.
Conducts telephone verifications of the information the individuals provide, such as address, employment, possible sureties, and other factors that play an important role in the individual’s opportunity of being recommended for Release on Recognizance (ROR).
Explain bail payment procedures and assist sureties with bail payment process.
Attention to Detail & Organization
Accurately record the interview responses into Agency’s computerized database.
Determine release recommendation for individuals using CJA’s standardized release assessment, which combines criminal history factors and community ties information.
Observe and monitor arraignment outcomes and assist individuals who have bail imposed.
Participate in various interdepartmental programs, such as Bail Expediting Program, which involves identifying eligible cases and making follow up phone calls to their sureties to expedite bail payment at the courts, rather than at DOC facilities.
Teamwork & Relationship Building
Interact respectfully with other agencies and court players, such as NYPD, DOC, NYS Court Officers, Supervised Release programs, Court Clerks, and Legal Aid in order to effectively facilitate court procedures and represent CJA in a professional manner.
Contribute to and work on various innovative pilot programs implemented in the boroughs and suggest potential improvements.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, preference to criminal justice and related social science majors. All interested majors are welcomed to apply.
Individuals with Peer Specialist certifications or the equivalent are welcomed to apply. Commensurate work experience may be applicable if a candidate has not yet attained an undergraduate degree.
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Computer literacy
Preferred: multilingual candidates in Mandarin, Russian, Spanish, French Creole (please list any languages in your application)
SALARY & BENEFITS
Compensation and Benefits
The salary for this role is between $35K – $38K + (top salary includes night differential for shifts after 3pm). Salary increases are determined by the collective bargaining agreement with the Union – Local 1199. CJA offers a very generous benefit plan including health, dental and vision insurance, a comprehensive mental health and wellness (EAP) plan, four weeks vacation, paid holidays and a retirement plan with employer matching contributions. Pandemic Disclosure
Note: Due to the nationwide pandemic CJA has implemented remote working for most non-essential staff and has instituted staggered scheduling for all essential staff. This position is categorized as essential for CJA. While it is uncertain what phase NYC will be in at the time of hire, the successful hire must be willing to assume responsibilities that are both remote and on-site at any of our locations throughout the City and be willing to submit to period COVID-19 testing and Daily health screening to ensure workplace safety.

HOURS (Depending on Availability and Subject to Change
Days: 6am-2pm or 7am -3pm
Evenings: 3pm-11pm or 4pm to 12pm
Midnights: 11pm-7am
