Met Council is America’s largest Jewish charity dedicated to serving the needy. Our programs range from 100% affordable housing at 20 locations to our family violence program to Holocaust survivor assistance to senior programming to crisis intervention to the largest free kosher food distribution program in the world. Our network of 75 food pantries, affordable housing sites and JCCs provide services directly in neighborhoods across New York.
Conduct minor in home repairs in accordance with weekly schedule in the homes of NYC senior and disabled residents.
Principal Responsibilities:
Conduct home repairs within the framework of the program.
Complete appointment paperwork and documentation, including using technology incorporated during visits.
Demonstrate utmost courtesy when dealing with clients.
Demonstrate proficiency with basic tools and materials.
Maintain tools and work vehicle in good order.
Maintain standard inventory of materials.
Complete assigned paperwork in a timely manner.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Competencies:
Qualified and experienced handy person skills.
Proficiency with assist rails installation.
Lock repair & replacement.
Basic plumbing and electrical skills.
Basic masonry and painting skills.
Basic carpentry and furniture repairs.
Using safety techniques and equipment at all times.
Build Relationships: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the organization
Communicate Effectively: Speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
Skill and Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent and some industrial school required.
Current Driver’s License with good driving record.
Good communications skills are necessary; must be fluent in English (both written and verbal).
Patience and ability to work with elderly clients.
Ability to read and follow instructions.
Able to work in partnership with other repair persons as well as independently when necessary for repairs.
Physical Demands:
Required Constantly: Physical activity including completing necessary tasks to prepare and complete in home repairs, carrying of repair items and tools required for tasks, walking, sitting, and driving to and from homes.
Required Frequently: Standing; climbing stairs; carrying large boxes and tools (approx. 10-25 lbs).
Required Occasionally: Reaching above the shoulder, and lifting 5-25 pounds, pushing and pulling.
Special Requirements:
Bi-lingual / Russian preferred
