The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking two Community Coordinators to join the Bureau of Commercial Waste within the Education and Outreach Unit. Reporting to senior management with varying degrees of latitude for independent initiative, judgment, and decision making, the successful candidates will perform professional, complex, and responsible outreach, community engagement, analytics, and development on Department commercial programs including:
- Conducting outreach and distributing public educational materials to New York City businesses aimed at promoting commercial waste zones, recycling, organics, and waste reduction in New York City.
- Interviewing business/property owners, managers and facilities staff while conducting detailed site inspections.
- Organizing and giving public trainings, workshops, and events.
- Providing technical assistance and authoritative interpretation of complex problems.
- Managing mobile survey platforms, workflow processes, and communications; gathering and analyzing related data regularly.
- Overseeing the coordinated development of informational materials, online tools, and public education strategies.
- Researching, evaluating, and making recommendations on program implementation and operational planning.
- Preparing comprehensive reports and presentations on projects and research studies.
- Serving as Department liaison with the commercial sector.
- Coordinating within the Department and with other City Agencies.
- Developing contacts within City government and with other recycling and waste management professionals.
- Providing support for other Bureau functions as needed. May require evening or weekend work, as relevant.
Minimum Qual Requirements
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.
Preferred Skills
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and writing skills. Attention to detail; ability to develop accurate written materials and ensure consistent messaging in all communications.
- Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively in-person, by telephone, and through written correspondence; able to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, and database applications, including MS Office Suite, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Experience working with program metrics; ability to interpret data, come to accurate conclusions, and communicate conclusions to a wide variety of audiences.
- Demonstrated copy-editing or graphic design skills with prior experience developing communications pieces and promotional campaigns, including print materials, reports, newsletters, and social media campaigns.
- Competency in ArcGIS mapping software, Adobe InDesign and/or Adobe Photoshop.
- Working knowledge of relational databases, including Salesforce or MS Access.
- Knowledge of New York City or State commercial waste management, applicable laws, and related issues.
- Prior experience/interest in City government, community and civic engagement, outreach, and field work.
- Prior experience/interest in organics recovery, recycling, and sustainability.
- In addition to English, fluency in a foreign language including Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Yiddish or Hebrew is a plus.
- Extensive knowledge of New York City and navigating New York City by vehicle and public transportation.
- Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
