Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Director, Global Communications and Content, the successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the ICANN Written Style Guide standards and providing guidance over the work of a team of writers; developing and writing high-impact communications content.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provide guidance, editorial direction, and ensure adherence to the ICANN Written Style Guide over the work of the Communications team’s writers.
- Work with and at the direction of the Senior Vice President, Global Communications and Language Services, to develop and create content for the ICANN Board Chair, Board of Directors, and ICANN President and CEO.
- Act as the Communications liaison and write and develop content for specific ICANN organization functions.
- Ensure ICANN’s Written Style Guide and Global English standards are updated with new guidance from Associated Press, Chicago Manual of Style, and to address changes in ICANN usage.
- Write content concerning a variety of technical and non-technical topics that involve ICANN and its community, its work, and functions, through announcements, blogs, speeches, reports, newsletters, social media, and other content.
- Emphasize and communicate ICANN’s key messages.
- Revise existing content for non-technical audiences.
- Revise documents multiple times as new issues arise and track revisions.
- Write content that conforms to Written Style Guide and Global English standards.
- Perform research and interviews with relevant stakeholders and experts.
- Determine the audience needs and goals for content.
- Write clear, concise, and grammatically correct copy.
- Drive creation of original concepts that result in effective and compelling communication.
- Understand different language styles that appeal to various target markets.
- Maintain a clear, consistent voice that properly represents ICANN internally and externally.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
- Superior writing skills in English (American English and Associated Press Style are the ICANN standards).
- Excellent global English writing skills.
- Writing content of various lengths, from short paragraphs to longer reports of 100+ pages.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Self-motivated and organized.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.
- Working with Adobe products like Acrobat Pro, newsletter platforms Constant Contact.
- Working independently and coordinating with team members via online tools.
- Writing for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Simplifying technical language for non-technical audiences.
- Excellent listening, collaboration, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to quickly grasp technical concepts, particularly related to operation of the Internet.
- Sound judgment and tact when interacting with various stakeholders.
- Multitasking abilities.
- Setting and meeting tight project deadlines.
- Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques.
- General understanding of the Internet functions, ICANN technical ecosystem, and Internet governance is an advantage but not a requirement.
- Knowledge of web and document layout is an advantage, but not a requirement.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree required, in Communications, Journalism, English, or related field.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience writing in the private or public sector.
- Experience working for a global organization and having written content translated into multiple languages preferred.
Languages
- Multilingual or bilingual preferred, ideally in one of the following languages: Spanish, French, Chinese, Arabic, or Russian.
- Fluency, both written and spoken, in English is required.
- ICANN is a global organization that values diversity; preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated skills in additional languages besides English.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements:
- Comfort level with an international work environment that requires availability at times outside normal business hours, seven days per week.
- Work is performed in a normal office environment with limited privacy and some exposure to background noise.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee regularly is required to sit. The employee is frequently required to talk or hear; use hands and arms to reach, handle or feel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
