The Beaverton Library is excited to announce two part-time openings for the position of Library Assistant 1. This role includes active tasks that are the same from day to day. As members of the Circulation section of the Materials team, Library Assistant 1’s are primarily responsible for the movement and placement of library materials. They work in a busy circulation workroom operating the Automated Materials Handling (AMH) system and at computer workstations to check in materials and prepare holds. They shelve all formats of materials throughout the library. Variable workloads and frequent interruptions require maximum flexibility. This position routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers and telephones as well as materials handling/RFID systems, Integrated Library System (ILS) software and materials carts and crates.
This is a non-exempt, SEIU-classified position. There are two vacancies. One part-time position has a 32-hour weekly schedule. The other part-time position has a 24-hour weekly schedule. Working a varied schedule, which may change periodically, is required, and includes evening, weekend, and holiday work.

Responsibilities
Depending upon assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties:
Provide accurate, courteous and efficient service to internal and external customers and consistently represent the library in a positive manner in accordance with customer service guidelines.
Shelve library materials in correct order following established procedures. Use automated systems to check in and sort materials according to established procedures. Process and shelve patron requests for materials (holds) in a timely manner to ensure minimum wait time for customers.
Respond to patron information requests; answer basic directional questions or provide referrals to appropriate staff.
Perform a variety of routine tasks in support of collection and shelving maintenance as assigned. Examples include cleaning shelves, shifting materials on crowded areas of shelving, moving collections to different locations, pulling items on weeding reports and identifying materials that need mending and changing their status in the catalog.
Assist with the monitoring of patron behavior and ensure positive interactions among patrons and staff.
Assist with general maintenance, appearance, and safety of the building. Provide basic troubleshooting and maintenance of equipment.
Support the library volunteer program by assisting with training, coaching, directing and recognition of the work of volunteers.
Assist with providing training to staff and volunteers.
Work with supervisor to create personal learning goals. Participate in opportunities to develop skills needed to meet the changing role of the public library.
Maintain required technology competencies as outlined in Beaverton Library Staff Technology Competencies.

Assist in creating a positive and supportive work environment with a culture of teamwork and communication.
Actively promote an environment respectful of living and working in a multicultural society.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or GED

Experience enabling the incumbent to perform the essential functions of the position.

Ability to satisfy the requirements of a background check and pass reference checks and a physical capacities test.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience working in a public library in a materials handling position.
Bilingual in one of the City of Beaverton’s priority languages (Spanish, Arabic, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, or Japanese).

Compensation
Wage Rate: $17.01 – $22.80 per hour
Starting wage will be determined depending on relevant work experience as outlined in the Equal Pay Act. New hires who meet minimum requirements will start at step one. Higher steps may be offered to those who have additional years of directly related experience to the position.
The city pays the full retirement contribution to PERS; provides employees with an opportunity to
participate in a deferred compensation retirement plan; makes available a public service loan
forgiveness program and tuition reimbursement program; and offers excellent health, dental,
vision and life insurance coverage. Benefits are pro-rated for part-time positions.
