Minimum Qualifications:
Requirements for the position include an earned doctorate in French or a related field from an accredited university. In particular, we seek faculty with expertise in teaching language, culture, and literature with a strong interest in the literature and culture of the French Caribbean as well as French Africa. They should be interested in helping develop a French program including recruiting students. The candidate should have proven ability to integrate technology into instruction and be open to a variety of course delivery methods (e.g. online or hybrid). Candidates with an expertise or interest in service learning pedagogy are especially welcome. Candidates with the ability to teach courses in another language offered by the department such as Italian and Arabic is considered a plus. Candidates must demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing Marist’s commitment to achieving academic excellence and diversity.
This position is part of a cluster hire and we will welcome four new faculty members as part of the Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies cluster. These new faculty members will join faculty in the departments of English, history, modern languages and cultures, and political science who focus on Africana Studies and Latinx & Latin American Studies. The position is also part of a major college-wide hiring initiative with the goal of creating a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive institution.
Essential Functions:
Primary responsibilities include undergraduate instruction in language, culture, and literature, as well as directing undergraduate research, recruiting majors/minors and coordinating language teaching curriculum with part time instructors.
Other responsibilities include contributing to the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures mission and assessment.
The expected course load for our faculty is 24 credits; typically distributed as a 4:4 course load.
Applicants should have an active research agenda and will be responsible for advisement of students and participation in departmental and college–wide service activities.

The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) is housed within the School of Liberal Arts along with departments in English, history, philosophy & religious, and political science. The department offers majors and minors in Spanish, French, and Italian as well as courses in Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, German, Russian and Latin at various levels. Students in our Spanish, French, and Italian programs are usually double majors in Teacher Education, Business, Fashion, History, Political Science, Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, and Biomedical Sciences among others. The department works very closely with Marist Abroad to support Marist programs at Florence and Madrid.
